Before he hit the big time, Elvis made his way into Sun Studios in 1954 and brought music to life. After a string of successful of Elvis hits, Sun Studios became the most famous recording studio in the world. Today, you can take a tour through the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll, where you’ll hear the outtakes from Presley’s recording sessions and lay a finger on Elvis’s first microphone.
Even if you aren’t interested in Elvis, Sun Studios also launched Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, B.B. King, Roy Orbison and many more to stardom. Elvis and his parents resided in Lauderdale Courts from 1949 to 1953. Here, Elvis took to the guitar in the basement laundry room and would play with other nearby musicians. The King would walk Beale Street and listen to blues musicians play their souls out. Now, you can tour and spend the night in apartment 328. Decorated to resemble the life and times of the early 1950s, the Elvis Suite at Lauderdale Courts has a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
And who can forget Graceland? Elvis’s home for twenty years until his death in 1977, Graceland is one of the most visited homes in America. The home-turned-museum takes you on a journey from The King’s beginnings to his superstardom.
