Audi History

Audi boasts a rich history dating back to the 19th century. During its lifetime, Audi has risen from its humble German roots to a household name worldwide, becoming one of the world’s largest and most respected automobile manufacturers. Earning a reputation for precision engineering and delivering today’s most advanced in-car technologies, Audi remains a pioneer in the auto industry. Keep reading for an overview of Audi’s long history!

Audi’s distinguished history dates back to 1899, when August Horch established the motor vehicle company known as Horch & Cie. Motorwagenwerke. Just ten years later, Horch established his second car manufacturing company, called Audi Automobilwerke.

In 1932, Audi earned its four interlocking ring logo when Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer (all auto manufacturing companies) merged to become the second-largest motor vehicle manufacturing group in Germany, known as Auto Union AG. Thanks to DKW’s reputation for reliability and practicality, DKW contributed largely to Auto Union’s overall success.

In 1965, the new DKW F 102 model made its way to market, marking the start of a new post-war era. Auto Union AG introduced its first four-stroke engine, giving way to cars that were sportier and more progressive. At that time, the company also took on a new name – Audi.

In 1970, Volkswagen introduced Audi brand to the United States market for the first time with the Audi 100, and the Audi 80/Fox followed shortly after. Slowly, the Audi brand evolved from a conservative automaker to a luxury brand, adopting elegance and sophistication with vehicles like the Audi 90 and the Audi V8.

Positioning itself as a leader in developing the time’s most sophisticated technology, Audi introduced the five-cylinder engine in 1976, turbocharging in 1979, and quattro four-wheel drive in 1980. Recently having earned the title of “leader” in the race to developing a fully autonomous vehicle according to a study conducted by Navigant Research, the automaker continues to deliver on that reputation.
