Audi’s innovative quattro® all-wheel drive system is renowned for its gripping capabilities, offering you added traction in the worst weather. This technology significantly enhances control and handling in dry and wet weather, and it also increases cornering performance. If you want to get the most out of your car, you want quattro® all-wheel drive. Keep reading for an overview of the innovative technology available for Audi cars and SUVs.
How It Works
How does quattro® work? This system operates by eliminating the need for a bulky transfer box, adding a center differential instead. This allows the engine to transfer power from front to back without slippage, while also using the most lightweight design possible. The quattro® system sends power to all four wheels, delivering more power and better grip, especially in bad conditions.
Specific to Your Car
Believe it or not, Audi actually tailors its quattro® AWD system for each individual model. For example, when you buy an SUV with quattro®, it has a different system than one offered on a sedan. There are four different variants depending on your model: hydraulic multi-plate clutch, crown gear differential, self-locking center differential, and viscous coupling. Sports models come with special capabilities as well, allowing better performance.
The quattro® system has actually been around for 35 years, when it was first invented for performance models. The Audi quattro® system became the first permanent all-wheel drive system for passenger cars, and it exists in multiple iterations. Currently, the quattro® system is in Generation VI.
