As the summer draws to a close, it is time to start thinking about getting your car ready for the colder and rainier autumn ahead. There are a number of key services you should have performed before the days grow shorter and the leaves start changing color.
As the nights get longer, you will be spending more time driving in the dark. Make sure your headlight lenses are clear and that all of your exterior lights are working properly.
Inspect your battery and look for signs of corrosion. Make sure the cables are firmly connected to the terminals. Have your battery tested to make sure it has enough juice to make it through the fall and winter ahead. If your battery is 4-6 years old, it may be time to get a more reliable replacement installed.
Tires need good tread to maintain their traction in the rain and when driving over wet leaves. You can use a penny to see how thick your tread is: If you put a penny in the tread upside down and can see the top of Lincoln’s head, then your tread is less than 2/32 of an inch deep, which means that it is time to replace your tires.
If your wipers are stuttering or leaving streaks, then they’re due for a replacement. The rubber on the blade does not last long, which is why wipers should be replaced every 6-12 months. You can also try cleaning the blades with glass cleaner and a paper towel to give them a boost, but if you haven’t swapped out your wipers in a while, they’re fairly inexpensive and easy to replace.
