Though it’s small, the West Memphis area has a lot of history. The town began as an exporter in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and then experienced considerable growth when the Memphis-Arkansas automobile bridge over the Mississippi was built nearby in 1949. West Memphis first existed as a bundle of small towns on the Mississippi River coast in the 1800s, with its history going back to the Civil War and the Trail of Tears. You can learn about these events and plenty of other history at the Arkansas Welcome Center, located just outside of town.
West Memphis’ greatest attraction is Southland Park Gaming and Racing, a greyhound- and horse-racing track that opened in 1954 and has expanded to one of the premier spots for gaming, racing, and food in the area. The Riverside International Speedway also has great races to see and features the state’s oldest continuously operated dirt track.
Since it’s located on the Mississippi, it’s no surprise West Memphis also has tons of great outdoorsy spots for hiking, fishing, swimming, and more. The Meadowbrook Country Club has a beautiful golf course, and the historic Butterfield Overland Mail Route, part of the Arkansas Heritage Trails System, is the perfect trail for a long hike. There are plenty of places to experience the beauty of the Mississippi!
